IESB Math Grade 6/7

The past term has been very busy and exciting in math classes for 6th and 7th graders. Each week, classes spend an hour in the math lab where they are able to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter using various manipulatives.

Students have used bottle caps to calculate multiples & factors. Some classes have used broken crackers to help calculate fractions. The grade 7 classes were using geo-boards to show perimeter and area of different shapes; grade 6 will have their chance in January.

Other classes went to the computer lab where they played educational math games to further their skills with operations involving fractions and angle measurements. All of this knowledge was put to good use in Week 49 when students took the term test.

Next term, Grade 6 will start a big geometry project which will eventually result in each student making their own ‘dream bedroom’. Grade 7 students will start to learn about algebra and equations, and then move on to calculating probability.
