News letter August 2010

The new year has started with new aims and aspirations. This year, year 8 as well as year 9 will be able to learn IGCSE topics in mathematics. This is good news for those who choose to study it from year 8 as their chances of passing will improve along with a higher pass mark. The mathematics department is using the recommended IGCSE Extended book to plus interactive resources to help make high grades possible.

Developing Maths Problems and Solutions

As a break from conventional practice, students were given a task to create their  own math exercises.

Based on a theme of their choice, students working generally in pairs, developed math problems of varying difficulty. They checked the answers to the problems which was presented along with the problems. Most students seemed to enjoy working on the task and the result was several creative and colourful presentations.

Hopefully students will be able to try working on each others’ questions during the spring term.

Quizzes and Calculators in Mathematics

Students and teachers have put summer behind them and are well underway with their work and homework. The first units are being completed and work is about to begin on unit 2.

The new calculators are very popular and well used . They should come in handy when we have the first quiz within the next couple of weeks as well as for the first term test before Autumn holiday.
