Junior School Update June 2010

The first group of students who have completed their two years at Junior School are now leaving to move to Middle School. We had a send-off for them, where they all sat down at set tables. After their time with us they will be very well prepared for what is required both socially and academically. Their English, especially, has developed tremendously, as has their knowledge in other subjects.

At the end of year ceremony several students were awarded prizes for best academic achievement in the different subjects as well as best proven ATL (being punctual, prepared, positive, active and co-operative). A number of students participated in the ceremony by singing, playing and reading poems. Two year 5 students took us through the programme so well prepared under the guidance of our music teacher.

The weeks before the summer have been filled with different activities. Some are highlighted here:

All Junior School had an athletics Sports Day at Farsta IP. Our happy, enthusiastic students did well and enjoyed themselves together during this great day, so well organized by our P.E. teacher. Lots of medals and cups were won! (See pictures further down)

To brighten up the tedious cleaning and getting everything ready before the end, our buddy classes in year 4 and 5 played football against each other.

Class 4d played in the finals of Schack-Fyran and came number 42 out of 95 contestants. Well done 4d! 5 individual students also played finals in Schack-Fyran.

The year 5 classes did a Science Fair, where their scientific investigations were documented and exhibited in the classrooms for parents and year 4 students to come and look.

The day before end of term, after all work had been done and everything cleared and cleaned, our students enjoyed a day out together as year groups. Year 4 went to Farstanäset and year 5 to Djurgården, repeating last year´s successful set-up.

A huge thank you to our wonderful students, for all the joy they bring. Many thanks to all our talented teachers and other staff who have all contributed to create and maintain the fantastic school we have and are so grateful to be part of. I believe parents can sense the positive atmosphere when coming here, for example for our Creative Arts Evening on May 20th, when a lot of student work was on display for parents to see.

Creative Arts Night at IESE Junior School 20th May 2010

Students work was on display from all the different subjects with a special focus on the aesthetics. An extensive selection of art and craft work was on display. While parents and students browsed the work there was also students performing in dance and on various musical instruments. The night was a huge success and we look forward to making it an annual event.

Junior School Sports Day 2010

On Friday 4th June the Junior Schools hosted their 2nd Athletics Sports Day at Farsta IP.  The sun was beating down and the students all arrived excited and ready to compete after weeks of preparation.

The day included the traditional 60m Sprint, Long Jump and Shot Putt as well as something a little different with The Multi Task Challenge comprising of three legged, wheel barrow, skipping and sac racing in teams.  A target game was also included as a class challenge! The students all wore class colours and the day was a fantastic success with 60m finals and class relays wrapping the days activities up.

Finally the medals and trophies were handed out to the overall winners of the different activities.  Two special awards were also handed out to the top Year 4 & 5 athletes on the day and these were awarded to RosannaCianelli 4B and Fredrik Kihlblom 5B.

Barbara Bergström Award

The topic for the competition was a story about something that happens in the future:

·         A Day with my Child

·         A Trip to the Future

Important was to have a good structure with an introduction, the main story and a conclusion to the story. Good descriptions of characters and places were also important. Many students have worked very hard indeed, and it has been extremely difficult to pick out the winners out of so many good contributions.

We congratulate the winners in Junior School.

Fosball Tournament

Here are the proud winners of the Fosball Tournament.

Talent Show February 2010

Before the sports holiday our Junior School students and staff enjoyed a great show of multi talents put up by our gifted students under the sure and able guidance of our music teacher. We had a variety of acts and featured everything from singing and dancing to rapping and speed math. The students worked very hard and the audience loved every minute. A big thanks to you to all students and we look forward to seeing more talent next year!

Autumn term 2009/Höstterminen 2009

The first term of our second year of IESE Junior School has been a wonderful manifestation that our school ethos and vision is working fantastically. Happy students, great staff and supporting parents prove we are on the right track. We shall continue developing and making this school an even better learning experience for our wonderful students.

Below are a few of the hightlights this term./Nedan återfinns några av terminens höjdpunkter.

Ms. Dolk – Assistant Principal/Biträdande rektor

Lucia

The traditional Lucia performance took place on Friday December 11th. The Junior School “luciatåg” led by our music teacher and our special educator gave us all that longed-for feeling of Christmas approaching. They looked lovely and sang beautifully!

Year 4 visit to/åk 4 besök på Tekniska muséet

At the beginning of December each of our year 4 classes had a day at Tekniska muséet,  working in a very inspiring way with “Energy and Climate”, watching and experiencing a 4D film. They got to build a sun cell car in lego.

For the second year, our year 4 teachers challenged the students to read. The required minimum was raised this year to 90 000 pages. Of course, our students won again and were given a party on December 15th. The volume read amounted to 138 532 pages. Even more fantastic than last year!  We are so proud of our avid readers.

Year 5 visit to/åk 5 besök på Naturhistoriska Riksmuséet and Cosmonova

In November all year 5 classes went for a study visit and guided tour at Naturhistoriska Riksmuséet on the topic of evolution,  followed by a Cosmonova film on the Grand Canyon and water resources.

School year 2009/2010 - Skolår 2009/2010

Our second year with Junior School has had an excellent start. Students, new and old, have very easily and quickly settled in and adapted to our routines which give a calm school where students can feel safe, learn and have fun. We are looking forward to another great year.

Junior School Sports Day

Teambuilding and Orienteering Competition

Sports Day September 2009

The Junior School have had a fantastic start to the new Academic year taking part in two afternoon sports days - Teambuilding Challenges and Orienteering Competition.

A large focus at the beginning of the school year is teambuilding and this was the theme of the first sports day.  On a beautiful sunny Thursday afternoon in September, year 4 & 5 congregated on the field at the front of the school in their class colours to take part in 10 class challenges.  These included the Human Knot, Beat the Goalie (Mr Gray), Crossing the Poison River and All Sit Down.  Pupils were competing against other classes in their year group for points, fastest time and number of goals.  The day was a great success and congratulations to the winning classes 5C & 4E.

Our second Sports Day was an Orienteering Competition.  Students had spent the previous 2 weeks PE lessons learning how to read maps and completing two short orienteering courses in preparation.  Again the sun was smiling down on the event and students completed a 15 stage course around the fields and wooded area in front of the school.  All the students really showed energy, enthusiasm and great team work.  Prizes were awarded to the fastest pairs in each year group and the fastest class overall.

Junior School Update June 2009

The IESE Junior School has successfully completed its first year.

It is with great gratitude and satisfaction that we look back on the first year of Junior School at IESE. We finished the year by saying thank you to our fantastic, committed teachers and staff but also to our wonderful students for making this first year such a nice and good experience.

During the end of term ceremony students got well deserved awards for ATL skills and academic achievement. A number of students performed in various ways through singing, playing, reading poems and dancing in the ceremony competently prepared by our music teacher and guided by two students in year 5.

The days preceding end of term were full of different activities. On June 1st we had an all Junior School Sports Day doing athletics at Farsta IP. In blazing sun-shine students enjoyed themselves by jumping, running and throwing in competitions very well organized by our sports teacher.

The year 5 students had done a science project culminating in a Science Fair held on June 4th. Parents were invited to come and look as were the students of year 4 and 6. Our students have already learnt how to apply scientific methods and investigate to come to a conclusion. We may very well have some young scientists emerging.

As a formal send-off to Middle School and a good-bye to their time at Junior School, all year 5 students sat down at tables in the restaurant with a delicious cake. This happened on the last Friday of school.  After the summer break they are moving on to the next stage in their education.

For our Class Trip Day on June 8th, all year 4 classes went to Farsta Gård and all year 5 classes to Djurgården for a day of fun and games together. Having won the Exercise Challenge against the teachers in the last few weeks of school, the students had proven their fitness.

Going the extra mile for education in Africa

A number of educators from Internationella Engelska Skolan will be cycling Vätternrundan to raise money for ‘Barnhemmet, Awasa', a school and orphanage in Ethiopia. The project originally started as a cooperation between Internationella Engelska Skolan i Täby and Johnnie and Mattias from the popular television program RoomService on Kanal 5. That cooperation continues and it is Johnnie and Mattias who remain the contact people with the orphanage and who will make sure the money raised by IES reaches the children. Johnnie and Mattias have been extremely active in their work with the orphanage and you can read more about it on the links below.

Six educators from IES have been planning the 300km bike ride since September - Jörgen Stenquist, Principal of Täby; Simon Varley, Principal of Jönköping; Robert Clark, Principal of Enskede, Nicolas Pirot, Sports teacher at Linköping; Scott Melnyk, Academy Manager at the head office and even the organisation's Managing Director himself, Peter John Fyles will get into the saddle for this important cause.

At 04:34 on June 12th the team of six will leave Motala and head south towards Jönköping, approximately 110km away, before turning north and following the lake all the way back around to where they started. IES believes in leading by example. Young people need role models in their school who show them that we can make a difference in the world. Please help support us by making a donation to one of the following numbers - even a small amount can make a big difference: Plusgiro  35 333-4  or  Bankgiro 255-2610. Make a note that your payment is for 'Barnhemmet Awasa'; you can even write the name of your school if you wish.

100% of the money donated goes directly to the orphanage and school in Ethiopia - all costs are paid for by IES. We thank you for your support.

Schackfyran in Globen Annexet 2009

As many parents are aware of, over the last few months our fourth grade classes have been involved in first learning and then developing their abilities to play chess. It has been truly exciting and rewarding to see the large strides forward that many of these new young players have made. Chess has been a popular past time in our student room and after school “Junior Club” since our school opened this year. When we first received information about the schackfyran chess tournament, our school staff and leadership all became very excited by the possibility of our school competing in what is a Sweden wide competition. When the possibility was brought to the attention of our students, the response was so overwhelmingly positive that it was truly the catalyst for us to submit our application to take part.  Chess as a game has been shown to provide many positive side effects for those that regularly play. It helps to improve concentration and increase logical thinking patterns. It has been linked to better math abilities, improvement in school work and grades in general, and the development of critical thinking skills. These are all things that our school strives for in our normal school day and so chess seemed a very natural addition. So on March 20th, after a great deal of anticipation, all of our fourth grade classes travelled to Annexet and took part in an exciting day of chess. Approximately 2000 players and many different schools from the entire Stockholm area were there to compete. I think I can speak for all when I say that it was an extremely capable and determined group that represented I.E.S.E in this tournament and what a fun and rewarding day it was for all who were there. Thanks go to all staff and parents who were there to help! See you next year!! / Mr. Carpenter, Junior Club.

-

Lucia spreads Light and Joy at the IESE

When the winter is at its darkest in Sweden, Lucia comes to spread light and joy  to the people.

At the IESE we had a wonderful performance with beautiful songs in Swedish as well as in English, which gave us all a taste of restful Christmas Holidays to come.

This year's Lucia performance was organised by Ms. Whistance-Smith and Ms. Fahlström Myrman. An extended thanks from all staff and students goes to them today for a wonderful job.

A huge and warm applause from staff and students to all students partaking in today's excellent performance!

Junior School Update

Our Junior School has had a flying start! We are very proud of how well the first few weeks at school went. Our new teachers  and staff are working hard to give our new young protégés the nice, good atmosphere we all want.

Already we have had a number of important visitors who have been here to see what a great, new school we have. Amongst others, the shadow minister of education visited and was impressed to see that it is possible to create a school where there is such a calm environment as we have. Students and staff are very proud of their school and very eager to tell why it is so good here.

Walking around the school, I meet happy children, greeting me with: “Good morning, Ms. Dolk”, and upon a little favour, I get the polite: “Thank you, Ms. Dolk”. Many students have commented on how good the school lunches are. The first assemblies for year 4 and 5 were an amazing first impression of how well our new students have learnt our procedures and how to behave.

Instead of a full Sports Day, we choose to have two afternoons with sporty activities on the field outside. On September 16th there was a football tournament and on September 23rd we had our “Clash of the Classes” with games where all children could take part and have much fun. A few pictures are to be seen here. The students loved it!

The children are learning English. The level of prior knowledge varies a great deal, and some find it harder than others, which is only to be expected. Our concept builds on exposing the children to as much English as possible, at the same time as teachers explain in Swedish or show visually to make sure students follow and learn. Students on all levels of English are taught together.

The Junior Club is developing and from September 1st onwards we have more staff and activities available. Our staff are doing a fantastic job in organising and developing an enjoyable afternoon schedule.

On October 22nd and 23rd we have S.P.T. talks in all classes. School will finish at 10.30. Individual times are sent out by the teachers. There will be no lunch served on those days and no Junior Club.

De hälsar ”Good morning, Ms. Dolk” och säger artigt ”Thank you, Ms. Dolk”.
