The team closely follows the policy regarding Anti-bullying which is detailed below.

The work of the Anti Bullying Team as a result of a report of bullying

  • A report of bullying arrives to the school’s Anti Bullying Team. The report can be either written or verbal and can be filed by students, personnel or parents.
  • The team member, who receives the report, investigates if the matter has been updated to the Student Care Team and/or to the principal. If that is the case, it should be discussed what role the Anti Bullying Team should have in the matter.
  • Two members are appointed, if the Anti Bullying Team should be engaged.  One rule of thumb is that the teacher who teaches the student(s) who is bullied, should not be involved in the matter. To do so can lead to complications. The student/s who bullies may conclude that the teacher has a negative approach towards them and is taking the bullied students side. This affects the relationship between the teacher and the student and deteriorates the student’s capacity to concentrate during the tuition. The student(s) who bullies should not have the opportunity to discuss the matter during class.
  • Both team members contact the informer to collect the information needed to pursue the matter.
  • Discretely they call a meeting with the bullied student. The purpose of the meeting is to ascertain concrete situations when the bullying has taken place, as well as the time and those who have been involved. Thorough notes should be taken during this conversation. Who was doing what, where and when? It is important to explain to the student in what way and why the team will intervene and they will be attentive to the student’s thoughts, reactions and own suggestions. Supportive conversations with the school’s counsellor will be offered if needed. It is vital to explain the importance of informing the student’s parents of the situation. One of the adults who talk to the student contacts the parents, preferably the same day, to inform them about the complex situation and explain to them how the team will handle the situation.
  • The Anti Bullying Team summons the student(s) who bullies to an individual conversation. It should take place the same day as the incident, and not later than the day after. If there is more than one participant, the team will call the student with the leading role in the bullying first for a conversation. The rest of the group, one by one, will be called afterwards. The conversation will always take place with two adults and one student at a time, without prior notice to the student(s) involved. It is important that the adults are as clear and concrete as possible, during the conversation. They tell the student what information they have received, give actual examples and point out that all bullying is forbidden according to the school rules. After the student has been confronted with this information, he/she will have the opportunity to speak his/her mind. It is important to have a dialogue, where the student is guided to see his/her actions and understands the gravity of the situation. Alternative conditions and behaviours will be discussed. The student is encouraged to tell their parents about the talk before the Anti Bullying Team contacts the parents that same evening. It is important that the parents are in agreement with what is happening and they can contribute to establishing boundaries and support for their kids.
  • The mentors to the students that are involved in the matter are informed. The class’ mentors have an important role to play, both in preventative work and the situation that needs to be attended to. They can usually contribute important information about the situation in the class as a whole.
  • There is a follow up within fourteen days after the first talks. If the bullying continues, the principal is contacted and a decision is made for further measures to be taken.

Follow up of the work of the Anti Bullying Team

The activities of the Anti Bullying Team and Supportive Friends shall be evaluated at the end of every academic year. All members of the Anti Bullying Team have a shared responsibility to assure that the evaluation is accomplished.
