Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet: 10 Years of Success!

2010 sees Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Since its inception in 1999 the school has established itself as one of the key centres for upper-secondary school studies in English in the Stockholm region.

Initially located in Gubbängen, just south of central Stockholm, the school moved to its present premises at Allhelgonagatan 4 on Söder in July 2008, just two minutes walk from Skanstull T-bana.

Offering the Swedish National Study Programmes in Natural Science and Social Science, IEG has always maintained a strong commitment to academic excellence and preparing students for university.

As part of their courses, students at IEG are encouraged to participate in national competitions and research programmes run by universities in order to bridge the gap between senior high school and university, and develop their skills to the fullest of their potential.

Science Students Succeeding
Natural Science students, in particular, have been particularly successful. Over the last five years, students have been placed in research facilities at the Karolinska Institute and at Tekniska Högskolan, undertaking project work. In addition IEG students have received prizes the last four years at the national "Unga Forskare" ["Young Researcher"] competition.

IEG has also placed far more students in the Summer Research Program at Karolinska Institute than any other gymnasium. Karolinska accepts twenty students for this prestigious program after a rigorous selection process. Over the past five years 18 IEG students have been selected.

100% Satisfied
With English the language of instruction at IEG, roughly 15 percent of IEG graduates have gone on to study at British and American universities such as Imperial College, Edinburgh University, Nottingham University, Durham University and Manchester University.

In a recent survey carried out by the school, 100% of students who responded to our questionnaire said that that IEG had successfully prepared them for university studies.

Introducing New Academic Opportunities
In 2009, IEG students sat the Cambridge IAS Level in English for the first time after the school became an approved Cambridge Examination Centre. In 2010, students will sit for the IAS in English and Maths with Chemistry likely to be introduced in 2011.

"It's a fabulous opportunity for our students to compete for an internationally recognized academic qualification," says school principal Dr Margret Benedikz. "We encourage our students to sit the IAS and IA Level exams in addition to the accredited Swedish National Programme as it gives them the opportunity to be evaluated alongside other top international students. We believe this is an essential step in gaining access to the very best in higher education."

10 Years and Counting
"IEG is school in the making," says Dr Benedikz. "By this I mean we're constantly looking for new ways to improve and new achievements to reach. We don't rest on our laurels."

Since moving to Södermalm the school has introduced a variety of new specializations ("inriktningar") to complement the Natural Science and Social Science Programmes, allowing students to focus on such areas as Biomedicine, Environmental Studies, Economics, Languages, Art and Drama.

"It's great to now see the social science students also beginning to achieve major recognition," says Dr Benedikz. "Last year we had students winning national essay competitions and trips to the UN in New York. Hopefully, this year IEG students across the disciplines will go on to shine."

With the school entering a new decade, at new premises and with a dedicated team of highly qualified staff helping students develop to the fullest of their potential, the future at IEG Södermalm definitely looks bright.

"Together students and staff have created an internationally-orientated academic school,” says Dr Benedikz. “Each students' success is part of our growing story as one of Stockholm's dynamic learning centres for post-sixteen education."

IES Students receive top grades in international exams

Possible grades are from A* down to G

On Friday the 2nd of October IES HQ welcomed two "Cambridge International Examinations" representatives from Europe. Mr Tim Lakin and Ms Ann Gibson. Together they met with the CEO, Mr Peter Fyles as well as the Head of Academics, Mr Damian Brunker.

The CIE Centre Administrators from each of our participating schools were also present. The meeting focused upon our continued partnership as well as an evaluation of student performance. The results below clearly show the quality of our English as a Second Language education with the percentage of grades achieved by our Grade 9 students in the previous academic year highlighted along side the world average score.

The tests were totally standardized, written under strict exam conditions and on completion, posted immediately to Cambridge to be assessed and moderated.

A huge congratulations to all of our staff and students involved in the initiative!
