IES Nacka has Opened its Doors and the School Year has Officially Begun!

We have truly enjoyed the process of welcoming all 330 new students to the school.  All the classes have had roll call, a mentor day and have begun a majority of their classes.  The process of learning about the building and how we best utilize the space has just begun and we have already found ways of making things better.  I thank all the parents and students for the feedback and look forward to future dialogue and cooperation with the parent association and the student council.
 
Parents! Please remember to sign up to be a member in the parent association and to serve on the board.  The sooner we get this vital part of the school started the better it will be for the students, staff and the school.  The perfect time is when we have our first parent evening September 8th at 18:00.  
 
Information packages have been taken home and the students are working hard to get all of them back in to their mentors.  Parents please remind your children to take the signed forms and information into their mentor by the end of the week.  

 

Last Wednesday evening was the kick off for the Year 9 and Year 8 (students and parents) learning a little about the process of the one to one program we are starting at IES Nacka.  We had a guest speaker, Mr. Lars Benon, the principal at Globala Gymnasiet. Lars shared some of his insights into what they have been doing for the last 6 years and inspired a good question and answer session.

 

The Year 9 and Year 8, with signed contracts in hand, were given their MacBooks on Thursday and Friday, received some basic training and each of them has started the journey of using them for expanding the possibilities in their studies.  We are all looking forward to seeing the creativity and individuality expressed via this program.  

 

The process of walking through the school, in and out of classes, and eating with students has been inspiring.  Students are so engaged in work that they do not even notice when I enter a classroom, students are speaking English in the hallways and embracing the ethos of the school.  The IES Nacka staff and students are just getting started and the future looks beautiful.

Vi har verkligen uppskattat att äntligen få välkomna våra 330 elever till skolan. Alla klasser har haft upprop, mentorsdag och kommit igång med vanliga lektioner. Varje dag upptäcker vi nya sätt att använda byggnaden bättre, en process som kommer att fortsätta under läsåret. Jag vill tacka föräldrar och elever för de idéer som kommit fram och ser fram emot fortsatt dialog med föräldraförening och elevråd.

Föräldrar! Kom ihåg att bli medlemmar i föräldraföreningen och arbete i dess styrelse. Ju tidigare vi får denna viktiga funktion aktiv i skolan desto bättre blir det för elever, föräldrar och personal. Anmälan sker i samband med föräldramötet den 8 september kl. 18.00.


Formulär för elever och förädrar och fylla i och återlämna till skolan har delats ut. Vi ber föräldrar påminna sina barn att lämna in dessa till sina mentorer.


Förra onsdagen var det kick-off för 1:1 programmet med datorer i skolan för våra elever i årskurs 8-9. Lars Benon, rektor vid Globala gymnasiet presenterade det arbete de gjort under de senaste sex åren med datorer i undervisningen. Föreläsningen inspirerade till en intressant frågor-svar diskussion.


Elever i årskurs 8-9, kom till skolan med påskrivna kontrakt och kunde kvittera ut sina MACBooks i slutet av förra veckan. Då fick de också grundläggande undervisning. Eleverna har nu startat sin egen resa i att upptäcka hur datorn kan utveckla möjligheterna till mer kunskap. Det ska bli spännande att få se den kreativitet och individualitet som programmet kan ge.


Att få gå runt i skolan, hälsa på i klassrummen och äta med eleverna har verkligen varit inspirerande. Eleverna är så engagerade i sitt arbete att de inte ens märker när jag kommer in i ett klassrum. Det pratas redan engelska i korridorerna och skolans etik och regler börjar sätta sig. Personal och elever på IES Nacka har just kommit igång och framtiden ser ljus ut.

Welcome to Internationella Engelska Skolan at Nacka

Dear parents and students,
 
Thank you for visiting Internationella Engelska Skolan at Nacka Strand’s home page. My name is Donald Christian and I am the principal for IES Nacka Strand. I want to take this opportunity to present a vision for our new school and introduce myself. 

IES at Nacka Strand is an unwritten novel.  It is only together that parents, students and staff will each day write the chapters that tell the story about the creation of a school of excellence.  Excellence grounded in the IES ethos, a passion for discovering what we love to do and the courage to take the difficult steps of making it possible.  Through cooperation and support we will strive to develop all aspects of ourselves so that we not only achieve academically, but physically as well as socially.  All this will be done in a caring, respectful and international environment. 

Who is the new principal? I have been living in Stockholm since the summer of 2000 and I am happily married to a wonderful Swedish woman.  I am originally from Cambridge, New York in the U.S.A.  I have been a dual citizen of Sweden and the United States since 2004.  My formal education consists of a degree in psychology, a Masters in Education and I will be starting the new principal training program at Uppsala University in the spring of 2010.  I have been working in the field of education since the fall of 1995, in the U.S.A. and Sweden, with the last four and a half years as the assistant principal at Intenationella Engelska Skolan i Bromma.  On my free time I enjoy athletics, spending time with friends and family and getting away to the great outdoors.

Lastly, it is with deep humility and honor that I accept the responsibility of being the principal of IES at Nacka Strand.  I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to help in the creation of a new school and I am looking forward to meeting each of you at IES Nacka Strand.

Tack för att ni ta er tid att besöka Internationella Engelska Skolan i Nacka Strands hemsida. Mitt namn är Donald Christian och jag är rektor för IES Nacka Strand. Jag vill ta tillfället i akt att presentera min vision för vår nya skola samt introducera mig själv.

IES i Nacka Strand är än så länge ett oskrivet blad. Tillsammans kommer vi – föräldrar, elever och personal – att skriva nya kapitel som beskriver en skola med utmärkt kvalitet. En utmärkt kvalitet som är förankrad i IES filosofi, en passion att upptäcka vad vi älskar att göra och modet att ta de svåra stegen för att göra det möjligt. Genom att arbeta tillsammans och stödja varandra kommer vi att sträva efter att utveckla oss själva akademiskt såväl som fysiskt och socialt. Allt detta kommer att ske i en engagerad, respektfull och internationell miljö.

Vem är då din nya rektor? Jag har bott i Stockholm sedan sommaren 2000 och är lyckligt gift med en underbar svenska fru. Jag kommer ursprungligen från Cambridge, New York, i USA och jag är sedan 2004 även svensk medborgare. Min formella utbildning är från USA. Jag har en universitetsexamen i psykologi, en magisterexamen i pedagogik och under våren kommer jag att påbörja det nya rektorsutbildnings¬programmet vid Uppsala universitet. Jag har arbetat inom utbildningsområdet sedan hösten 1995, såväl i USA som Sverige. De senaste fyra och ett halvt åren har jag arbetat som biträdande rektor på Internationella Engelska Skolan i Bromma. På fritiden umgås jag med vänner och familj, tränar och njuter av att vara ute i naturen.

Det är med stor ödmjukhet och ära som jag accepterar ansvaret att vara rektor för IES i Nacka Strand. Jag ser det som ett privilegium att få möjlighet att bidra till skapandet av en ny skola och jag ser fram emot att träffa er alla på IES Nacka Strand.
